In this great digital age, it's no wonder how the East Indian influenced, electronic band "Lal Meri" found eachother. They met on the Net...
In the summer of 2006, Singer/Songwriter/Producer Rosey finished her latest jazz record “Luckiest Girl” (Quango 2008), and was searching for a new project to inspire her creativity. Fate—or luck—led her to some online demos posted by Songwriter/Trumpet Player/Programmer Ireesh Lal. A few of the songs featured his cousin Pooja Lal, a classical Indian vocalist based in New Delhi. It was Ireesh’s wish to start a project that would blend East-Indian vocals with World Music, West-Coast Trip-Hop and Electronica. Rosey was delighted, and raced to Ireesh’s beach pad to hear more. She drove home that day with a CD of cool tracks and a head full of ideas.
Around the same time, a friend told Rosey to check out the music of 2-time Grammy-Nominated Producer/Songwriter/Remixer Carmen Rizzo. She did—and became an instant fan. The two multi-talented artists bonded over their love for Kate Havnevik and garden tools. A great friendship was born, and when Carmen needed a singer for a gig to support his new record "The lost art of the idle moment" (The Lab/Universal 2005), he asked Rosey if she would bless his show with her velvety voice. She was happy to help. After a long rehearsal at his studio, as Carmen drove Rosey to the Hollywood tow lot to reclaim her missing car, she played the demos that she and Ireesh had been working on. Carmen was thrilled. It wasn’t long before the three LA locals created a fresh new sound combining the music they loved so deeply.
“Lal Meri” comes from the title of an ancient Hindi spiritual folk song. Meri means “my,” Lal means “red.” The phrase translates to “my heart” or “my love.” Their group performs this beautiful old song today to keep its message and feeling alive. It has also inspired them to write new songs conveying their incredible love of life, and hope for freedom and peace in this fruitful, fearful, mystifying world.
While producing their first studio album, Lal Meri began playing to enthusiastic crowds throughout Southern California. Next, they’ll be taking their new breed of of world music and electronic vibes all over the globe. Each Lal Meri show is filled with surprises, like Indian dancers, incredible guest vocalists (Pooja Lal, Natalie Warner), superb musicians, painters, poets and whatever else they may dream up…
