Latin American and Yiddish music have flirted with each other throughout the 20th century. The ¡Viva Yiddish! Project: The Yiddish-Latino Sound of Los Angeles will celebrate the rich interplay of contemporary Yiddish and Latin American cultures in a world-premiere concert.
Put together especially for the festival by a collaborative creative team including Michael Alpert, Frank London, Josh Kun, Aaron Paley and special guests, the band will signal the influence of Latin America on past Yiddish music especially, of the 1940s and 1950s, the local inter-relationship of Yiddish and Pachuco music, and look ahead to the future with the creation of a new Yiddish-Latino fusion combining elements of Banda music with Eastern European klezmer music as well as many other cross-cultural fusions. The group will include Brave Old World's Michael Alpert, the Klezmatics' Frank London, a Los Angeles-based Banda group and a host of surprise guests resulting in more than two dozen musicians onstage at once with accordions, keyboards, trumpets, bass, percussion of all stripes, violin, tuba, tenor horn, clarinets, trombones and saxophone, to just name some of the instruments.
The concert will be "ear-blowing." For more information, please visit "www.yiddishkayt.org." |
