One of the best ways to put a bow on a stellar summer is with a powerful musical statement.
On September 23, after our gala ceremony honoring Executive Director Emeritus Michael Alexander, GP will do what we do best, present a tribute to the great Fela Kuti. There have been many popular artists throughout musical history but few ascend to the status of leaving a worldwide imprint recognized beyond music and into social justice. Fela left a profound impact on pop culture in an indisputable manner and is on the short list of musical icons whose legacy established a global phenomenon -- Afrobeat and influenced people not only in his native country but around the world.
Grand Performances has always embraced global music and championed music from Africa for decades carving a pathway for many Los Angeles presenters to do the same. To represent Fela as authentically as possible, Sahr Ngaujah who portrayed Fela on Broadway and Ethio Cali will provide the musical backdrop for this annual benefit concert. The result is a musical convergence that will keep you on your feet! Mark your calendar and don’t miss this momentous date.
Your $20 ticket purchase to our benefit concert will help support GP and bring more influential artists back on our stage next summer.
