A Guide to Cuban Music
Culver City and Grand Performances have teamed up to throw a special Cuban-themed block party on Saturday, April 5th, 2025 (4pm) at the Culver Steps. More info and RSVP here.
Our musical acts for that day, DJ Anthony Valadez and Changüí Majadero, took some time out to talk to us about their musical journeys in Cuba and which Cuban artists they consider to be essential listening (stay tuned for the full interviews, which are coming soon).
The band Changüí Majadero carries on the rich Afro Cuban musical tradition of changüí music. Originating in Guantanamo, Cuba in the 1800s, changüí later evolved into salsa music. In the clip below, Gabriel from Changüí Majadero deftly improvises a song for us so you can feel that changüí rhythm.
Gabriel riffs about the upcoming Culver City show in traditional changüí style.
