July 9th - Ethio Cali + Cut Chemist

Ethio Cali pays homage to the Golden Age of Ethiopian Jazz and Soul, with collaborations with DJs Rani de Leon and Cut Chemist.

Ethio Cali is a Los Angeles-based Ethio-Jazz ensemble, led by trumpeter, arranger, and composer Todd Simon. The ensemble’s sublime sound is inspired by the golden age of Ethiopian music of the 1960’s and 70’s, filtered through a lens that is uniquely Los Angeles.

Acknowledging the diverse musical foundations of Ethio-Jazz, the ensemble also draws inspiration from the rhythmic and melodic textures across Africa, Central/Latin America and the Caribbean.

Cut Chemist has been on the forefront of DJing, turntablism and genre-bending music production for over 30 years. Co-creator of Brainfreeze with DJ Shadow and original member of multi-Grammy winners Ozomatli, Cut Chemist has also recorded and toured the world with pioneering hip-hop crew Jurassic 5. Throughout his epic career, Cut Chemist has continued to push boundaries, testing our musical palates while introducing us to obscure musical finds.

As a DJ for over 20 years, Rani de Leon is known for his signature blend of eclectic and accessible worldly sounds, jazz textures, and ‘feel-good’ roots & soul music. From the discerned dancefloor to the avid music listener, tasteful selections are on the menu for every occasion. He is founder of Soul in the Park, which brought international, soul and jazz audiences together in an unassuming venue for live music in Los Angeles. He is co-founder and resident DJ of Radio Afrique, a series of events focusing on music and film from Africa and the diaspora, and member of Los Angeles-based web radio collective dublab, where he hosts a monthly radio show Tizita Radio highlighting music of nostalgia.
