MARIACHI WOMEN’S FESTIVAL
Saturday’s Mariachi Women’s Festival was simply unforgettable. Featuring no less than five bands and 50 total musicians hailing from LA to Mexico City and Jalisco, this was a celebration of a beloved artform that spans both generations and borders. The harmonies, the ornate outfits, and the carefully choreographed movements were a spectacle to behold on our stage.
The evening started with our youngest mariachis, students from LA’s own Garfield High. With talent and poise, these bright young women signaled to the world that they were ready to carry the torches from their elders.
Then Mariachi Femenil Voces de Mexico wowed the audience with lively trumpets, staccato strings, and crowd pleasing adlibs.
We were honored by the presence of Mariachi Femenil Corona, making their United States debut. The group’s violin-rich arrangements contributed to a light and airy sound, which was pitch perfect for sunset.
During the next set, the Mariachi Divas showed off their Grammy Award winning vocal chops with soaring ballad after soaring ballad, accentuated by a flute section (a rarity among the night’s ensembles).
Our final band of the evening, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, wowed audiences with a set rich in mariachi classics that had the crowd singing along blissfully.
The crowning moment of the night was the final set, which brought back the four professional bands on stage for an epic collaboration.
