Grand Performances (GP) welcomes global musician and artisan Jamal Mohamed as the next artist in its TAKEOVER series. Taking place on GP's Facebook and Instagram Live, Mohamed will provide both artistry and insight with a Middle Eastern drum performance and percussion workshop. Known for teaching classes at esteemed locations like the University of Hong Kong, and the American University in Egypt, Mohamed’s set will demonstrate the rhythmic beauty of Toca percussion, Sabian Cymbals, Cooperman Frame Drums, and Pro-Mark drumsticks.
Lebanese virtuoso Jamal Mohamed constructs and plays instruments to create a poignant fusion of Middle Eastern, Jazz, and Latin motifs. Currently on the faculty of Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the Chicago native has shared international stages with acclaimed artists Sting, Mark O’Connor, and Giovanni Hidalgo. As a founding member of the percussion group Ddrum, Mohamed co-received Drum Magazine’s award for Best Percussion Group and collaborated with the Dallas Symphony and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stewart Copeland (of The Police). His brand partnership with Toca percussion led to the creation of the “Jamal Doumbek” signature drum. Mohamed currently performs with World Music collective Mandala and improvisational group Drum and Wind.
