LOS ANGELES - Performing by yourself can be a challenge, but DJ/producer/percussionist/vocalist Gingee makes it look easy. She creates her own beats, writes, raps, and plays all the instruments for her performances.

"I’m kind of like running around to different areas and playing different things, layering them and looping them. I have a lot of fun," said Gingee.

Gingee hails from a musical, Filipino family, which led her to study the music of the world in college. She wanted to connect with the sounds of her home country, but also to represent her Los Angeles roots.

"I wanted to blend it all together into something that reflected my identity as a Filipino American," said Gingee.

That’s why you will hear familiar sounds taken from hip hop, salsa, and electronic music, just to name a few, mixed with the indigenous instruments of the Philippines.

"[I'm] translating it into something that could be universal," said Gingee.

She's bringing her universal, worldly music to what seems like the ideal space, the International Terminal of LAX.

She's part of the LAX Presents program that brings local artists into the airport. Being from L.A., the magnitude is not lost on Gingee.

"LAX is just home base. Flying into LAX is like I’m finally back home," she said.

In her home base, Gingee drew crowds with her genre-defying music. Travelers flying from around the world stopped to listen and she hopes it resonated with them.

"There’s people that come off their planes, off international flights, they are coming from anywhere. So, for them to see us as one of the first things they are exposed to in Los Angeles is truly and honor for us," said Gingee.

Gingee and the dancers from Ancestral Vision Movement aren’t the only performers that will be seen in the airport. Each month, there are new acts in new terminals.

"LAX is providing this space for local artists to practice their craft. It is a beautiful space," said Gingee.

So, if you are traveling through LAX, stop and listen to the sounds of Los Angeles.
