Grupo Kual?

Thanks to the legendary cumbia band Grupo Kual @grupokualdinastiapedraza, last Saturday evening California Plaza became the new home of the 6,000 cumbia fans in attendance (this was one of our largest shows in our 37 year history).

We say “home” because folks arrived early, camped out, set up their picnics with homemade food and drink, and then proceeded to embrace the music and each other. It was an inclusive and unifying experience, similar to the neighborhood BBQs and quinceañeras throughout the Latin quarters of Southern California where the joy of cumbia is passed down from generation to generation.

The multi-generational crowd had a pulse to it. Grandparents, parents, and children alike all bounced, shuffled, and spun together to the upbeat cumbia grooves.

The accordions and güiras were just as electrifying as Angel Pedraza’s stage presence. The charismatic Grupo Kual frontman connected with the audience, many who knew his lyrics and sang along word for word. Like an ambassador, Pedraza often shouted out the various communities and countries that contributed so much to the rich musical tradition of cumbia, again making all feel at home. The crowd definitely appreciated it.

Adding to the magic were:
- Two truly tireless backup dancers whose choreography was impeccable
- A lively opening set by LA’s hometown heroes @VeryBeCareful
- Fierce DJ performances by @Hellotones and @discos_rolas (@xandao_sound @og_ganas)
- Magnetic MCing and hosting duties by @MexTape

As we wrap up our 2023 summer season, we cannot thank you all for the abundance of love and good vibes we experienced with you. You make us feel at home!
