GP 2024’s Best Of: Lights, Camera, Action!
Our 2024 season wasn’t just about the incredible performances on stage, it was also about the behind-the-scenes magic that brought each show to life. From our state-of-the-art livestreams to the immersive stage production and breathtaking lighting, every detail came together to create an unforgettable experience for both our in-person and virtual audiences.
Livestreams
This year, we continued to expand our livestream capabilities, making it easier for audiences near and far to experience the magic of Grand Performances. Whether you were in downtown LA or tuning in from across the globe, our livestreams ensured that no one missed out on the joy and energy of the performances.
With shows like Daymé Arocena’s soulful set and the Celia Cruz tribute, viewers were able to connect with the spirit of the performances in real time. Our team worked hard to deliver high-quality streams that captured every note, every movement, and every emotion, so that those watching from home felt just as much a part of the event as those dancing in the plaza. The real-time interaction on social media during livestreams also gave our virtual audience a chance to connect with each other, sharing their reactions and love for the music.
Stage Production
Each show this season was crafted with an attention to detail that made our stage a true work of art. From the moment you arrived at California Plaza, you were transported into a world where the performers weren’t just playing music—they were telling a story through every visual element on stage.
Our stage production team put in countless hours to design and build sets that complemented each performance’s unique vibe. Whether it was the tranquil and mindful vibe for Laraaji & Arji OceAnanda’s ambient electronica or the vibrant, colorful stage design for Chucho Ponce y Los Daddys' electrifying cumbia show, every stage was tailored to elevate the audience experience.
Special shout-out to our tech team, who handled everything from sound mixing to set changes with precision, ensuring that each performance flowed seamlessly and left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
Lighting
The magic of Grand Performances doesn’t stop with the music—our lighting design played a huge role in setting the mood and enhancing the emotion of each show. Our talented lighting team, outdid themselves this season with stunning visuals that perfectly matched the energy of the performances.
From the hypnotic light patterns that enveloped the crowd during Okwy Osadebe’s West African Highlife performance to the soothing, nature-inspired light show during Laraaji’s set, our lighting team brought each moment to life. These visuals weren’t just beautiful—they were designed to create an immersive experience, drawing the audience deeper into the music and the world of the performers.
At our Max Roach Centennial Tribute, the intricate lighting setup highlighted the transitions between the many jazz musicians on stage, creating a sense of fluidity and connection that mirrored the music itself. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the lighting became part of the performance, helping to tell the story of each piece.
Looking Forward
As we close out the 2024 season, we’re incredibly proud of the work that went into making each show more than just a concert—it was a full sensory experience. We’re already planning for 2025, where we’ll continue to push the boundaries of livestreaming, stage production, and lighting design to bring you even more unforgettable moments.
Thank you for joining us, whether in person or online, and for supporting our mission to make the arts accessible to all. We can’t wait to share more magic with you next year!
