The genius behind the Detroit-based Tribe collective of the mid-7Os brings his band to the Grand Performances stage for its first appearance. Phil Ranelin was the smooth, in-the-pocket saxophone player on many a Motown release in the late '60s who helped Berry Gordy. Ir churn out hits. His history goes way beyond the pop/R&B elements of the Motown era, however. Straight-ahead jazz aficionados know him for his own work, produced after he left Motown Records. It is music that has a stirring blend of spiritualized horns and slinky, percussive grooves. The new millennium brings a rebirth of Phil Ranelin and the Tribe Renaissance. Be ready to open your hearts and minds to a new musical vibe.
