La Marisoul curates: The California Feetwarmers & Hermanos Herrera

  • Grand Performances 350 South Grand Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 90071 United States (map)

Bringing New Orleans jazz and ragtime to the West Coast, The California Feetwarmers deliver horn-heavy rags, banjo stomps, and happy trad jazz for your ears and feet! Los Angeles natives, they formed in 2012 and have branched out of their Southern California roots having played/toured in over 10 countries, including Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Albania, where they played at the U.S. Embassy as part of the 4th of July celebration. The band’s twist on the classics led renowned blues musician, Keb’ Mo’, to invite them to collaborate on his 2015 Grammy-nominated album, BLUESAmericana. In 2013 they brought the energy of their live shows into the studio and released their self-titled album, which brings in traditional jazz, blues and rags, and features guest appearances from Phil Alvin (The Blasters) and Andy Bean (The Two Man Gentleman Band).

It’s a family affair when Hermanos Herrera hits the stage, consisting of five brothers, Jorge Andres, Luis Albino, Miguel Antonio, Juan Pablo, Adan and Jose Marcelino, and their younger sister, Rebecca Isabel. Having established themselves as the future of Regional Mexican music, Hermanos Herrera continues to bring this genre to new heights. They’ve performed at renowned venues and have played alongside top artists, including Los Tigres del Norte, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, and Linda Ronstadt. Along with this, all six are UCLA graduates and their music has raised over $100,000 for their community.

Marisol Hernandez is the lead singer of LA band, La Santa Cecilia, which also consists of accordionist and requintero Jose Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana, and percussionist Miguel Ramirez. Their common love of music and openness to all genres, from Led Zeppelin to Los Alegres de Teràn, led them to the concept of La Santa Cecilia in 2007 – named after the patron saint of musicians. They’re considered the modern-day hybrid of Latin culture, rock, and world music and continue to captivate audiences with their songs about love, loss and everyday struggles. Their 2014 song, “Ice/El Hielo” helped to put them on the map with its strong message focusing on the fear of deportation that many immigrants face daily. Having been born and/or raised in the U.S. to immigrant parents, this issue speaks louder than ever and shows their dedication to mixing their cultures to speak as a testament to the struggles they’ve faced. That same year, La Santa Cecilia won a Grammy for Best Latin Rock Album for Treinta Días and were nominated the year after for their album, Buenaventura. Their song, Chicle, has also been featured on Emmy award-winning series, Weeds.
