No matter what your favorite genre is, everything we listen to today has roots in classical music. From modern rock and pop to Latin beats, jazz, and even your phone’s ringtones, the music from the Classical era has shaped the soundscape that we love.

Join KUSC hosts Solomon Reynolds and Suraj Partha, along with talented students and alumni from the Colburn School of Music as we dive into electrifying classical performances in the GP amphitheater. Together, we’ll uncover the fascinating journey of music’s past, present, and future.

KUSC host Solomon Reynolds will feature the following musicians from the Colburn School of Music:

Adam Millstein

Adam Millstein is a violinist who will begin his DMA studies at UCLA with Varty Manouelian and Movses Pogossian this fall. He is the recipient of a scholarship from the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience. He holds an Artist Diploma and Masters of Music degree from the Colburn School where he studied with Robert Lipsett, and a BMA from the University of Michigan. He is the Program Manager of the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices at the Colburn School. He acted as curator for the Initiative’s 2021 Schulhoff and More project where he organized and performed on filmed recordings of composer Erwin Schulhoff’s music, some of which is on the album “Shapeshifter: Music of Erwin Schulhoff” for the Delos Label. He has also recorded music of Franz Schreker, Pál Hermann, Mieczysław Weinberg, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Mr. Millstein actively curates and produces concerts including a filmed Recovered Voices performance for the Library of Congress. He has guest lectured at Arizona State University. As an orchestral musician, Mr. Millstein has acted as concertmaster of the Sequoia Symphony and Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played as guest associate concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony and Louisville Orchestra. He has performed as a substitute with the LA Opera and LA Chamber Orchestra and appeared as soloist with US and international orchestras.

Emma Lee

With her true passion lying in the sea of orchestral performance, Lee joins the Pacific Symphony cello section in the Fall of 2023. Lee has been led under the batons of many artists including Marin Alsop, Elim Chan, James Conlon, Stéphane Denève, Edo de Waart, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Alan Gilbert, Klaus Mäkelä, Gianandrea Noseda, Larry Rachleff, Sir Simon Rattle, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Lee has performed with prestigious orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and the Verbier Festival Orchestra. She was a member of the Colburn Conservatory of Music Orchestra’s Principal Pool. Lee has performed at legendary venues worldwide such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the Barbican in London, and Usher Hall in Edinburgh.

A musician fueled by thrilling collaborations, Lee’s passion for chamber music has led her to collaborate with many renowned artists such as Matthew Aucoin, Glenn Dicterow, Karen Dreyfus, Dennis Kim, David Rejano, and Geraldine Walther. Lee has been involved in many unique opportunities, including her performance of Bach’s Cello Suites with the New York City Ballet Principal Daniel Ulbricht in the Colburn School’s revolutionary See the Music, Hear the Dance series. She has also been invited to solo and perform in the cello section of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra with Carl St. Clair. She was awarded the opportunity to solo as a winner of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra Competition. Dominic Cheli

Dominic Cheli embraces the role of an artist-citizen in his multifaceted career as performer, educator, composer, and director. He is described as an “inspired keyboardist” (artsfuse) whose playing is “spontaneous yet perfect, the best of how a young person can play.” (Symphony Magazine). His rapidly advancing career included his Walt Disney Concert Hall Debut with the Colburn Orchestra where Dominic was “mesmerizing, (he) transfixed the audience.” (LA Times).

He gave his Carnegie Hall Recital Debut in 2019 and has had a busy performing and recording career ever since. He recorded his 2nd CD on the Naxos label of the music of Liszt/Schubert, and was a performer/producer/editor on a 3rd CD of the music of Erwin Schulhoff for the Delos Label featuring his collaboration on Piano Concerto no.2 with Maestro James Conlon. He also recently completed work as a composer, audio editor and performer on the documentary Defying Gravity (2021).

With a fascination and appreciation for the benefits of technology especially in our new virtual age, Dominic is the head of Tonebase Piano, an online education company. As a result, he leads content strategy, directing, and production with some of the greatest pianists in the world both in cinematic videos and interactive livestreams to the 20,000+ subscribers on the platform. As part of his piano trio, Darshan Trio, alongside Vijay Gupta and Yoshi Masuda, Dominic performs with Street Symphony. To engage with the Los Angeles community, they play music to create opportunities of human connection in homeless and incarcerated communities. Mr. Cheli is a Yamaha Artist and faculty member of the Colburn Community Music School. In his spare time, Dominic enjoys cooking and competing in Ironman triathlons.
